A project to build a dry dock facility on Sharjah's eastern seaboard, away from the Strait of Hormuz, will be complete early next year, officials have said.
Authorities at Sharjah's Department of Seaports and Customs also revealed plans to redevelop the emirate's seaports and customs service at a Sharjah Consultative Council session on Thursday.
The development of a dry dock in the eastern region, first announced in 2009, to Sheikh Khalid bin Abdullah Al Qasimi, the chairman of the Department of Seaports and Customs.
"The dry docks would help in the repair of ships and maintenance to be carried out in the emirate," he said. "Once its services are in place more foreign companies would come to use Sharjah ports."
He said a study to upgrade and redevelop Kalba Port as a trading port was also being undertaken.
A proposal to redevelop Hamriya Port had already been approved and architects had started working on drawing the design that would be completed in the next five months.
Dibba Al Hosn port would in six months start handling both sea and land traffic simultaneously, especially with goods coming from Oman. But priority is still being given to goods coming over-land.
The Khorfakkan port, also located on Sharjah's east coast, will now also be handling tourist ships in cooperation with immigration authorities.
Sheikh Khalid said they were already working on redeveloping Port Khalid, the emirate's biggest port in the centre of the city. The redevelopments at this port have involved building new berths and increasing water depths. The depth of its five berths are now at 12 metres.
Rashid Al Leem, the director general of the Department of Seaports and Customs, said it was working on increasing Emiratisation levels by training more nationals in logistics services to take up most of the jobs in ports, customs and free zones.
