Workers yesterday carried out a record-breaking construction feat on Al Reem Island in Abu Dhabi as they hauled a 750-tonne section of a penthouse bridge to a height of 245 metres.
The developer, Sorouh Real Estate, described this as the highest construction lift for any property development. In terms of weight, it is the equivalent of lifting a Eurostar train or about 200 adult Asian elephants.
The span lifted this week is part of a structure bridging and capping the 65-storey Gate Towers, which will ultimately contain 16 penthouses with views of Abu Dhabi Island and the Arabian Gulf. Each penthouse will consist of two storeys and include an indoor swimming pool. The property is part of the Shams Abu Dhabi development.
It took three days, starting on Monday, to accomplish the lift.
Good weather was critical for the task, with calm conditions needed. The weather forecast was monitored closely to make sure that it could be done without disruption.
The structure that was raised was 40 metres long and more than 30.6 metres wide.
