Centre will be hard act to follow

Another striking, futuristic building on the island, the Performing Arts Centre, is designed by Zaha Hadid.

The plan for the centre calls for a music hall, concert hall, opera house and a theatre, as well as "an experimental performance space".

The arts centre, along with a maritime museum, is set to be part of the second phase of the cultural district on the island.

TDIC said the centre and the museum would be delivered eventually but that it was focusing its attention on the first phase of the district.

Manarat Al Saadiyat, a 15,400-square-metre visitor centre, and the first element to open on Saadiyat, is designed to present the vision of the island, and includes the Arts Abu Dhabi Gallery.
