Masdar has inaugurated a 6 megawatts windfarm in the Seychelles, sufficient to power more than 2,000 homes.
The project will satisfy 8 per cent of the electricity needs of Mahé, the country's most populated island. The eight-turbine windfarm was funded by the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development. It will help the Seychelles to meet its target of producing 15 per cent of its energy from renewable sources.
"The addition of wind power is a major step toward meeting our clean energy targets and reducing our dependency on imported sources of power," said James Michel, the country's president.
Fuel currently accounts for a quarter of the Seychelles' imports. Renewable energy is becoming an increasingly attractive alternative to fossil fuels, said Masdar.
"With prices falling and new advancements in technology, renewable energy is reaching grid parity in many parts of the world," said Sultan Al Jaber, Masdar's chief executive.
In April, the company launched a 15MW solar plant in Mauritania, a project that supplies 10 per cent of that country's energy, and was also funded by the Abu Dhabi Government.
Masdar is working to bring smaller scale solar applications to Afghanistan and Tonga.
