David M Rubenstein

David Rubenstein is the most colourful of Carlyle's founders. The former lawyer and domestic policy adviser to US president Jimmy Carter shows up at all kinds of private equity conferences and political events, offering opinions on the industry and markets. He worked at law firms in New York and Washington and in political posts before Carlyle's founding in 1987. He graduated from Duke University in 1970 and from the University of Chicago Law School three years later. Mr Rubenstein, who sits on 30 non-profit boards, has a net worth of US$2.6 billion (Dh9.55bn), according to Forbesmagazine's rich list. He is an avid collector of historical documents.
William E Conway Jr

Before Carlyle's founding in 1987, Mr Conway was senior vice president and chief financial officer of MCI Communications, then one of the US's largest telecommunications companies. He had previously worked at First National Bank of Chicago in corporate finance and management. He graduated from Dartmouth College in New Hampshire and has an MBA from the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business. Mr Conway is worth about $2.5bn, according to Forbes. He is a supporter of educational and religious charities, according to Carlyle's website. He lives in McLean, Virginia, is married and has one child.
Daniel A D'Aniello
Background Finance, hospitality
Mr D'Aniello had extensive experience arranging financing for companies and overseeing mergers and acquisitions before Carlyle's formation. He worked at the hospitality company Marriott and the global drinks giant PepsiCo. Along with the other founders, Mr D'Aniello played a major role in building Carlyle into the world's largest private equity company despite difficult markets in the late 1980s, early 2000s and the recent financial crisis. Mr D'Aniello graduated in 1968 from Syracuse University in New York state and earned a Harvard Business School degree in 1974. He lives in Vienna, Virginia, is married and has two children. Forbes puts his net worth at about $2.5bn.
