Ahmed Khalifa Al Shamsi, the chairman of Fujairah Tourism and Antiquities Authority, talks about the emirate's plans to entice more tourists and business travellers.
q: How many new hotels are planned in Fujairah?
a: The emirate of Fujairah has 14 hotels/resorts and 17 hotel apartment buildings. There are a total of 2,079 rooms and 3,077 beds for the hotels and resorts and 701 rooms and 1,552 beds for the apartments. Four new hotels have been constructed and will be opening soon.
q: What has been the impact of the new motorway to Dubai?
a: We are very optimistic that with the opening of this new highway, investors and visitors will be encouraged to visit Fujairah because of its easy accessibility from Dubai. We believe that in due time Fujairah will be known in the rest of the emirates and perhaps in the world.
q: What is your main strategy to attract more tourists to the emirate?
a: We are still in the process of developing our strategy with the help of other government departments and other agencies.
q: What are average hotel rates and are hoteliers benefiting from increased investment in and around the port?
a: Average rates for a standard room are from US$200 (Dh734) for the resorts and $70 for hotel apartments. Increased investment is creating more demand for hotel rooms.
