Premier League: Ups and Downs - round 23
The National staff | January 22, 2013
The National's weekly guide those whose English Premier League stock is on the rise, and whose is falling faster than Lance Armstrong's testosterone levels...
UPSDavid Silva, Manchester City The Spaniard is beginning to find the creativity that helped take City to the league title last season, and he has also rediscovered his scoring touch as his brace against Fulham helped close the gap on neighbours United to five points.
Clint Dempsey, Tottenham Dempsey was brought in from Fulham last year to score vital goals for Spurs and none may be more vital than the injury-time equaliser against Manchester United on Sunday to keep them on course for a return to the Uefa Champions League.
Adam le Fondre, Reading His double against Newcastle United – his third in two games – is beginning to get Reading a reputation as a comeback team. They were two down to West Brom last week before taking the points, and he overturned the deficit at St James’ Park on Saturday.
DOWNSTony Pulis, Stoke City The manager has seen a dramatic reversal in his side’s fortunes as defeat to Swansea City was their third straight in the league and they have now only won one in eight. The coach needs to do something to get things back on track.
Queens Park Rangers Loic Remy may offer a glimmer of hope for Premier League survival for the London club, as he scored on his debut against West Ham. But Harry Redknapp’s side need to start winning games and soon, as Joe Cole denied them all three points on Saturday.
David de Gea, Man United The keeper did his part admirably for 92 minutes in helping keep a Spurs onslaught at bay on Sunday but then undid all his hard work with a sloppy punched clearance falling to Aaron Lennon, who crossed for Dempsey to snatch a draw at a wintry White Hart Lane.
