This "trial" is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the West, and especially of the United States government. It does not resonate with, nor have any positive relevance to, the Cambodians themselves. Nor does it even suffice as a morality tale; similar crimes (committed with the active connivance of the West, and, yes, the United States, exactly contemporaneous with the Khmer Rouge are) are not even mentioned. The trial serves the West in three ways: 1) Communism is irremediably evil; 2) Cambodians (and this by extension applies to the citizens of all emerging nations) can save themselves only by prostrating themselves before Western judges and prosecutors; and (3) the West, and especially the United States, bears no responsibility for the Khmer Rouge era. At least now, George Soros, due to the dismal performance of his publicists and hirelings, has been forced out into the open. Of course, the real problem, as Philip Short pointed out some years ago, is having this farcical exercise to begin with.
