My impression was that the commenters and other newspapers certainly did get the joke but were "playing along". The Pan Arabia Enquirer does not hold the monopoly on satire and the commenters were just entering into the spirit of the website.

This entire article is full of supposition. Mr. Ali failed to realise that the Muslim Scholars were pushed aside for politicial expediency and attampt to readress the dire position of declinging influence is met with apathy as decadance life style became the norm. This inturn breeds nepotism, tribalism and inevitable regression. It is seen often people with a narrow preconcieved version of history penders to such cliche expressed in the article. The replacing of middleclass by new money people, supports a simplistic take on religion simply pushes aside the pluralistic tradition of Islamic cultures. In the current economic climate. The rise of salafism is a proof of that. The Salafism from the East to the West with help of petrodollar is what causing present day regression. As the muslim political leaders fails to relate to the mass, it is somewhat expected for the laymen to gravitate towards a form of utopia (claimed by Salafist). In time this will fail and it will be upto the scholars of tradition to pick up the pieces. The tele evengelical culture dominates the religious landscape leaving no space for religious pluralism as was the case in golden age of Muslim civilisation where discourse and education were valued and encouraged. Not so in the modern era where prime goal is to secure wealth as fast as possible.
