Just to add to Ali's comment. From the Islamic point of view, dogs should be kept outside where possible. They are viewed as unclean and in certain conditions when they come into contact with a Muslim, person or clothing they may invalidate the state of Wudu (wash required before prayer). Dogs are valuable additions to society, as guard dogs, working dogs such as working with the Police, sniffer dogs, hunting dogs, seeing dogs for the blind. This may be why you will note that Muslims may avoid contact with a dog.
