Paul McCartney is Britain's richest musician

Paul McCartney has been named Britain's wealthiest musician for the 25th year running in an annual list compiled by The Sunday Times. McCartney, 70, shares an estimated 680 million (Dh3.8 billion) fortune with his third wife, Nancy Shevell. The composer Andrew Lloyd Webber was ranked second-richest with 620m (Dh 3.5bn), ahead of the Irish rockers U2 with 520m (Dh2.9bn). Elton John follows with 240m (Dh1.3bn), while Victoria Beckham is helped to a 200m (Dh1.1bn) joint fortune by her husband David. - AFP

Rajinikanth to attend Cannes festival

Amitabh Bachchan won't be the only Indian film superstar attending next month's 66th Cannes International Film Festival. The 62-year-old actor Rajinikanth will attend the festival to unveil the trailer of his new film Kochadaiyaan. The film's producer, Murli Manohar, confirmed the news. "It's a big moment in the history of Indian cinema. Rajni is as excited as a child about the way Kochadaiyaan has turned out." Bachchan is attending for Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby, which opens the festival on May 15. - IANS

Zulu to close Cannes

Jerome Salle's film Zulu, starring Forest Whitaker and Orlando Bloom (pictured) will close the Cannes festival. The film, adapted from the novel by the French author Caryl Ferey, was shot entirely on location in South Africa. It tells the story of two Cape Town police officers caught up in a search described by organisers as combining "elements of political film noir and social study". This year's Cannes jury will be headed by Steven Spielberg. - AFP

Lohan: I'm taking care of myself

At Thursday's Hollywood premiere of Scary Movie 5, Lindsay Lohan showed up late but reassured reporters on the red carpet: "I'm taking care of myself." The troubled actress is scheduled to report for three months of locked rehab next month. Lohan blamed her tardiness on a dress mix-up and smiled when fans chanted her name: "Are they chanting? That's crazy. That's insane. But, yeah, my dress was left in New York." She appears in a brief segment of the film playing herself alongside Charlie Sheen. - AP

Thriller sweeps Hong Kong awards

The police action thriller Cold War swept the Hong Kong Film Awards on Saturday, winning nine prizes including the Best Actor gong for the veteran star Tony Leung Ka-fai. The film, about two rival officers' struggle to run a hostage rescue operation, also took Best Film, Best Director and Best Screenplay at the event considered to be Hong Kong's Oscars. The Best Actress honour went to the singer-turned-actress Miriam Yeung for her role in the romantic comedy Love in the Buff. - AFP
