Berlinale diary: Meryl, Angelina and Billy Bob
Meryl Streep has admitted that Margaret Thatcher, whom she plays in The Iron Lady, currently showing in the UAE, wasn't a person she particularly admired before she made the film.
"I had a knee-jerk reaction to her as a liberal, left-wing actress in America, living in New York," Streep told a press conference at the Berlinale, where the film received a special screening. "I thought she was friends with Reagan, which was bad. I thought she had frumpy clothes and bad hair. This is how women judge each other in the public realm."
Meanwhile, Angelina Jolie has been awarded the Cinema for Peace prize for her directorial debut In the Land of Blood and Honey. Jolie received the award at the Berlinale, where the Bosnian war drama has been playing, and walked the red carpet with Brad Pitt. The award was presented by the Egyptian former presidential candidate Mohamed El Baradei. Both Jolie and Pitt have now flown to Bosnia for the film's premiere there.
Still with Jolie, the actress was in Berlin at the same time as her ex-husband Billy Bob Thornton, who was in town to promote his new drama, Jane Mansfield's Car. He also drummed up support for his next project, an "ethereal" story about a guy who picks up a woman while on a road trip. Interestingly, one of his producers implied to Variety that it was inspired by Thornton's past relationship with Jolie.
