It has been 17 years since the release of the last Pink Floyd studio album, Division Bell.
Before that, there had been a gap of seven years since the release of A Momentary Lapse of Reason.
This year, though, new and old Floyd fans will be able to gorge on the band's classic prog-rock sound with a slew of re-releases and unreleased material across a variety of formats including CD, DVD and iPhone apps.
The massive campaign, to be launched by the band's record label EMI in September, will be titled Why Pink Floyd ...?
The EMI chief executive Roger Faxon called the campaign "a unique collaboration between EMI and one of the most creative and influential bands in history". On September 26, the campaign will open with the remastered re-release of 14 studio albums in either a six-disc "Immersion" box set, a double-disc "Discovery" edition, vinyl LPs and digital formats.
The second phase will kick in on November 7 with the release of the Immersion and Discovery editions of Wish You Were Here, including bonus material from Floyd's 1974 Wembley concerts.
The band's greatest-hits compilation A Foot in the Door - The Best of Pink Floyd will be released on the same day.
The third and final phase will be under way in February of next year with the Immersion and Experience editions of the Floyd masterpiece The Wall.
Storm Thorgerson, the band's art director, has been enlisted to oversee the campaign's visual design, including album booklets and new art work for the box sets and DVD content.
