Chilly Gonzales recorded this album in a Paris Studio over a 10-day period and the results are dazzling compositions reflecting the Canadian pianist's loose and playful approach. Known for his collaborations with Daft Punk, Feist and Peaches, it is in his solo recording that Gonzales sounds his best. The opening track White Keys establishes the record's overall sound, the musician's playful touch underpinned by a reflective vibe. Minor Fantasy could have been a lilting waltz tune if Gonzales hadn't decided to keep it sombre, while Venetian Blinds is stark with melodies unfurling like smoke in a saloon. The album's centrepieces are Evolving Doors and Othello. The former has Gonzales taking a break from the album's plaintive mood to work up a slight sweat with his cascading melodies. Othello, meanwhile, is both delicate and soulful - a burst of optimism sadly limited to just two minutes.
