Those still craving live classical music after the Abu Dhabi Festival wrapped up last month will be pleased to hear that there’s more to come on the city’s cultural calendar.
This Saturday at the British School, the Al Khubairat Singers will be performing a version of Brahms’s Requiem, an intensely powerful choral composition.
The 30 vocalists will be joined by an orchestra of 25 musicians, all of whom are based in Abu Dhabi.
Jonathan Lyall, the choir’s director, is also head of instrumental studies at the British School Al Khubairat.
“We have all these amazing events at the Emirates Palace, with big-name classical performers from around the world, but this is a chance to see some home-grown talent,” he says.
The community choir is made up of parents of children at the British School Al Khubairat, gifted students and other keen classical music singers. “There are other choirs in Abu Dhabi, but a lot of them do the lighter stuff. We are the only ones who stick to this kind of serious classical music,” he says.
