Film Review: Wreck-It Ralph

A high-energy opening and nostalgic console cameos can't steer Disney's new computer animated comedy far from familiar territory.

Wreck-It Ralph

Director: Rich Moore

Featuring the voices of John C Reilly, Sarah Silverman, Jane Lynch

Disney delves into video game history as John C Reilly voices the titular Ralph, an arcade villain who becomes tired of his lot and crosses over into other games in search of becoming a hero. The film's unique premise and excited energy blazes through the opening half-hour, with cameos galore and some great gags. Unfortunately the references can't last forever, and once Ralph enters the two main games (a Halo-style shoot-em-up and a vivid, cartoon racing game), the plot becomes a rather familiar, saccharine Disney tale. While the plot may waver, the voice cast is impeccable. Reilly's Average Joe voice works perfectly for the character's ambitious tone, backed up by strong support performances from Jane Lynch and Adam Tudyk. The comedian Sarah Silverman is hit-and-miss as Ralph's sidekick Vanellope, who is equal parts funny and annoying. Overall, Wreck-It Ralph may struggle to match its bombastic opening, but it remains an affectionate love note to computer games past and a thoroughly enjoyable family movie.
