The LA Galaxy midfielder David Beckham is hoping another high profile loan spell at AC Milan will boost his chances of being selected in England manager Fabio Capello’s World Cup squad.
“I need to give myself the best chance possible to make the World Cup squad and playing for Milan on loan will help me to do that,” said Beckham after Milan announced that the midfielder would join them on December 28 for a six-month loan spell, following last season’s successful stint.
While the move will undoubtedly enhance Beckham’s international prospects, it could spell the beginning of the end for his time in America.
Lauded as the superstar who could finally establish the game in the American mainstream, following his arrival almost three years ago, Beckham’s popularity nose dived earlier this year when he delayed his return after a successful three-month loan spell at Milan. When he got back to the US, Galaxy fans, the American media and his Los Angeles teammate Landon Donovan questioned his commitment to the club.
Beckham, however, as he has so often done in his career, rebuilt his reputation. Galaxy have reached the MLS Cup playoffs for the first time in four years this season. Once again, Beckham has bounced back.
“I’m committed to LA Galaxy and MLS in the long term,” said Beckham. “I’m completely focused on ending this season on a high note.”
The Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani said: “We are very happy to see again David Beckham with the rossoneri jersey after the splendid experience of last season. We are certain that this time will help the player take part in the next World Cup.”
Beckham’s first Serie A game could be against Genoa at the San Siro on January 6. Capello will be circling his calendar.
